Expression of Suggestion and Obligation : Penjelasan lengkap, Rumus, Contoh, dan Soal

Assalamualaikum warrahmatullahiwabarrakatuh.

Bahasa Inggris chapter 3 membahas tentang giving suggestions and obligations. Untuk
memberikan saran (suggestions) dalam Bahasa Inggris kita dapat menggunakan “should”
dan “should not”, sedangkan untuk menyatakan kewajiban/keharusan (obligation) kita
dapat menggunakan modal “must” dan must not”. Berikut ini uraikan materi nya

Expression of Suggestion is the statement for giving advice to make someone better next time.
For example parents suggest their children in solving their problem. It released while someone
has got bad condition or certain occasion.  

Expression of Asking Suggestion (Ungkapan meminta saran)
· Will you give me some suggestion, please?
· Do you have any suggestion for me?
· Please tell me what should I do?
· Any idea?

Expression of Giving Suggestion (Ungkapan memberi saran)
· I recommend that you ….
· I’d like to suggest that ….
· I suggest that you ….
· It’s better for you ….
· You should ….
· You must ….

Should digunakan untuk memberikan saran (suggestions). Saran sifatnya tidak wajib berbeda
dengan obligation/kewajiban/keharusan.

Pattern/pola :
                        S + Should + V1
                        S + Should be + Adjective/noun/adverb

Contoh :
 1)  Susi should drink medicine to get well soon
      Susi sebaiknya minum obat supaya cepat sembuh

  2) You should be calm in the classroom and listen to the teacher
      Kamu sebaiknya diam di kelas dan mendengarkan guru

Untuk kalimat negatif kita menambahkan –not setelah should.
Contoh : Adelia should not eat sweet and hot food.

Untuk kalimat tanya kita letakkan should di depan kalimat.
Contoh : Should we go to Tita’s house to do the homework? Yes, he should.
                Apakah sebaiknya kita pergi ke rumah Tita mengerjakan PR? Ya. Tidak.) 

Contoh Dialog
Della : Mita, why don’t you join us to do homework?
Mita  : I am sorry, I have a headache.
Della : Really? You should go to doctor. You will recover soon.
Mita  : I hope so, Thank you Della.
Della : You are welcome.

Obligation is described as pressure on a person to do something or not to do something.
There are strong obligations such as rules and necessities and weak obligations such as advice.
The rule is that must is used for internal obligations, and have to is used for external obligation.

Strong Obligation

1. Must
    Must artinya harus/wajib, yaitu sesuatu yang harus dilakukan dan dikerjakan, jika tidak
    maka akan ada konsekuensinya. Kewajiban sangat kuat menurut dirinya sendiri dan
    orang-orang sekitar.

Pattern/pola:
                        S + must + V1
                        S + must be + Adjective/noun/adverb
Contoh :

 1) Rendra must wear his uniform during school time.
     Rendra harus/wajib memakai seragam saat sekolah

 2) All people are waiting for Sinta so she must be on time.
     Semua orang sedang menunggu Sinta jadi dia harus tiba tepat waktu

Untuk membentuk kalimat negatif kita menambahkan –not setelah must. 

Contoh : 
-  You must not put on T shirt during the school hours.
-  They must not be noisy in the classroom

Untuk membentuk kalimat tanya kita letakkan must di depan kalimat

Contoh : 
-  Must we obey our parents’ advise? Yes, we must/No we must not
   Apakah kita harus mematuhi nasihat orang tua? Ya. Tidak.

2. Have/has to
    Have/has to artinya harus/wajib, yaitu sesuatu yang harus dilakukan dan dikerjakan,
    karena ada pihak luar ikut campur, bersifat impersonal dan lebih cenderung kepada
    sebuah aturan atau situasi umum.

Pattern/pola:
                        S + have/has to + V1
                        S + have/has got to + V1

Contoh :
 1) She has to use wheelchair
     Dia harus memakai kursi roda

  2) They’ve got to buy the tickets
      Mereka harus membeli tiket
 

Weak Obligation

Weak obligation is described as the right/correct thing to do. It may come from tradition,
custom or culture and may be seen as advice.
Kewajiban yang lemah digambarkan sebagai hal yang benar untuk dilakukan. Ini mungkin
berasal dari tradisi, adat atau budaya dan dapat dilihat sebagai nasihat.

Contoh :
1) Our classmate got accident. We should visit him in the hospital.
2) You ought to prepare your school things before you leave home. (it is a good idea)

Obligation in the past

Obligation in the past in much more simple : use only needed to or had to.
Had to is most common. There is no difference in strengt or internal/external in the past. 

Kewajiban di masa lalu jauh lebih sederhana: penggunaan hanya perlu atau harus.
Had to adalah yang paling umum. Tidak ada perbedaan kekuatan atau internal/eksternal
di masa lalu.

Things to remember:
1. The simple past of “must” is had to
2. The simple future of “must” is will have to
3. The difference between “have to” and “must” is that “have to” indicates that someone else
    has imposed conditions on us.
4. Must/have to = 100 % obligation
5. Should = 50 % obligation. It’s more an advice than an obligation.

 Dialog

 Hesti : Gina, can you help me to clean our classroom?
 Gina : Of course, shall we start it now?
 Hesti : Okay. I will clean this side, and you clean the side over there.
 Gina : Okay, I will do it.
 Hesti : I suggest that the windows are open, otherwise this clssroom will full of dust.
 Gina : I am sorry. I haven’t open the window
 Hesti : I will do it
 Gina : I don’t think I am quite helpful
 Hesti : nevermind.
