An Idiom is a word or phrase whose meaning is not readily seen from the meaning of its word parts.
Idiom dalam bahasa Indonesia berarti "ungkapan" adalah satuan bahasa yang berupa kata atau frase membentuk sebuah arti baru yang berbeda dari makna kata-kata yang menyusunnya. 
contoh idiom dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah:

•  jago merah yang berarti api
• kambing hitam (orang yang dipersalahkan)
• meja hijau yang berarti pengadilan
• gulung tikar (bangkrut)

15. chew the fat = gossip (gosip)
16. clear as mud = confusing (membingungkan)
17. climb down = apologize (permintaan maaf)
18. cost the earth = very expensive (sangat mahal)
19. dead to the world = unconscious (pingsan)
20. fall from grace = become unpopular (tidak terkenal)
21. fight shy of = avoid (menghindari)
22. forty winks = a short sleep (tidur singkat)
23. go Dutch = pay for yourself (alias bayar sendiri)
24. hard lines = bad luck (tidak beruntung)
25. knees knocking = afraid (takut)
26. learn by heart = memorize (menghafal)
27. lose (your) hearth = fall in love (jatuh cinta)
28. make good = succeed in life (sukses dalam hidup)
29. openhanded = generous (murah hati, suka menolong)
30. out of bounds = prohibited (terlarang)

Idiom penting untuk dipelajari karena sering ditemui dalam percakapan sehari-hari. Tidak ada rumus tertentu untuk mengartikan sebuah idiom. Cara yang paling efektif untuk memahami idiom adalah dengan banyak mendengarkan, menyimak, membaca referensi dan mencarinya dalam kamus.
