Narrative Text : Definisi, Bagian-bagian, Tujuan, Ciri kebahasaan, Contoh dan Soal Latihan

Apakah kalian pernah nonton film Beauty and the Beast? Apakah kalian masih ingat ceritanya?
Jika kalian masih ingat itu berarti kalian telah melihat contoh dari Narrative text. Bagi kalian yang
belum paham apa itu Narrative text, berikut ini penjelasan lengkapnya.                                                        
                               NARRATIVE TEXT

Narrative text is a text which tell about imaginative story such as fables, fairy tales, short stories,
legend and folklores. It is a story with complicatory or problematic events and find the solution
to solve the problem at last.
The social function of narrative text :
-  to entertain/amuse the reader with a story
-  to teach moral value


Generic Structure of Narrative Text

1. Orientation
    The beginning of the story that consists of introduction of character, time and place.
    (memperkenalkan tokoh, watak, dan seting waktu dan tempat cerita)

2. Complication
    Where the problem in the story start to appear
    (merupakan awal mula terjadinya masalah dalam cerita)

3. Resolution
    Where the problem in the story is solved
    (menceritakan bagaimana masalah dalam cerita tersebut diselesaikan)

4. Coda/Reorientation (optional)
    Clossing expression or statement that shows the story end and moral value of the story.
    (akhir cerita dan pesan moral tentang cerita dan bersifat optional kadang ditulis dan kadang tidak)

Language Feature of Narrative Text:

1. Using past tense (found, got, lived, ran away, etc)

2. Using action verbs. A verb that shows an action.
    (turned, dug, walked, climbed, brought etc)

3. Using adverb of time, place, manner
    (Once upon a time, one day, in the mountain, ever after, etc)

4. Using adjective to describe the character in the story
    (pretty, clever, tired, arrogant, big, lazy, etc)

5. Using time conjunction (when, after, then, soon, suddenly, etc)

6. Using specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general.
    (Cinderella, Snow White, Sangkuriang, Rara Jonggrang, Pinokio, etc)

7. Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said, ”My name is Snow White”).
    The direct speech uses present tense.

Example of Narrative Text : Fable

                                                THE WOLF AND THE LAMB

         A lamb was grazing with a flock of sheep one day. She soon found some sweet grass at
the edge of the field. Farther and farther she went, away from the others.

         She was enjoying herself so much that she did not notice a wolf coming nearer to her.
However, when it pounced on her, she was quick to start pleading, “Please, please don’t eat
me yet. My stomach is full of grass. If you wait a while, I will taste much better.” The wolf
thought that was a good idea, so he sat down and waited.

         After a while, the lamb said, “If you allow me to dance, the grass in my stomach will be
digested faster.” Again the wolf agreed. While the lamb was dancing, she had a new idea. She said, “Please take the bell from around my neck. If you ring it as hard as you can, I will be able to dance
even faster.

         The wolf took the bell and rang it as hard as he could. The shepherd heard the bell ringing
and quickly sent his dogs to find the missing lamb. The barking dogs frightened the wolf away
and saved the lamb’s life.

Terjemahan:
                                                    Serigala Dan Anak Domba

         Pada suatu hari, Domba sedang merumput dengan para kawanan domba. Dia segera
menemukan beberapa rumput manis di pinggir lapangan. Semakin jauh ia pergi, jauh dari
yang lain.

         Dia terlalu asyik sehingga dia tidak melihat serigala mendekat padanya. Namun, ketika menerkam, dia cepat mulai memohon, “Tolong, tolong jangan makan saya belum. Perutku penuh rumput. Jika Anda menunggu beberapa saat, saya akan terasa jauh lebih baik. “

         Serigala pikir itu adalah ide yang baik, jadi ia duduk dan menunggu. Setelah beberapa saat,
anak domba berkata, “Jika Anda mengizinkan saya untuk menari, rumput di saya perut akan dicerna lebih cepat. “Sekali lagi serigala setuju. Sementara anak domba menari, dia punya ide baru. Dia mengatakan, “Silakan mengambil bel dari leherku. Jika Anda membunyikannya sekeras mungkin,

         Serigala mengambil bel dan membunyikannya sekeras yang dia bisa. Gembala mendengar bel berdering dan cepat dikirim anjing untuk menemukan domba yang hilang. Anjing menggonggong
takut serigala itu dan menyelamatkan nyawa domba.

         Once, there was a king of Granada kingdom who decided to marry. To find a worthy woman, court barber told an idea to the king. “I have a magic mirror. If any woman who is not kind looks       into that mirror, there will many spots on mirror surface.”

         Soon, the news was announced to all people in his kingdom. Almost all women wanted to be Queen of Granada. However, there was no woman coming to have a look into that mirror. Days and weeks went by, King was no closer to get his Queen.

         Then, barber told King that there was a brave shepherdess on a mountainside. King asked him     to invite that shepherdess to his palace. Also, the royal hall was full of ladies as well as knights.

         King told that shepherdess to look into the mirror. Shepherdess answered that everyone made mistakes. However she wasn’t afraid to look into the mirror. Many ladies surrounded her and found   that it wasn’t a magic mirror. Those ladies complained and felt being tricked.

         Finally, King stated that there was no trick. King wanted to find a bride who was confident     about her character like the shepherdess.
